Winter Walks

One of the great joys of winter can be playing with your pet in the snow—but it’s important to make sure your best furry friend stays safe in the cold weather. Paws are the most delicate, so consider wiping a coat of petroleum jelly on them as protection before going out. Once pets are back inside, you’ll want to towel them off. Pay special attention to feet and toes if they haven’t been wearing booties. It’s also a good idea for pets to have a source of unfrozen water in a plastic container while outside.

All About De-Icers

Winter in our part of the country is as much about ice as it is about snow—and that means lots of de-icers and ice melts everywhere. But those products can be hazardous for pets. Most of them contain calcium-based ingredients and salts that can make animals very sick if they’re ingested. Especially beware potentially deadly ice melts made with ethylene glycol, which is the same active ingredient as antifreeze. Even “pet-safe” products can irritate paw pads and skin. They’re also not as good for melting ice. For your pet’s safety as well as your own, we recommend using kitty litter or sand, and always washing your pet’s feet after they’ve been outside in icy weather!
