Nicole Dumas, DVM

Dr. Nicole Dumas founded HEAL Veterinary Hospital to give Brooklyn pets thoughtful, comprehensive care and to build lasting relationships with the people who love them. Originally from Trinidad, she participated in wildlife search and rescue and rehabilitation there. Her veterinary training also took her to externships in Jamaica, Trinidad, the Bahamas, and hospitals across New York City.
After moving to New York in 2017, Dr. Dumas completed the steps required to become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. She worked as an associate veterinarian in Staten Island and as an acting medical director in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, before founding HEAL. Today, she leads the hospital’s medical team and continues to care for patients throughout DUMBO and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Dr. Dumas is a general practice veterinarian with a particular passion for surgery, dentistry, rehabilitation, and exotic animal medicine. Over six years of caring for exotic pets at HEAL, she has become known for welcoming unusual cases and taking the time to work through difficult questions. She enjoys the careful thinking those cases require—and helping families understand what is happening with their pets and why she recommends a particular course of care.
Prevention is central to her approach. Dr. Dumas looks at each patient’s full health history, not just the concern that brought them in that day, so she can help families make informed decisions for the years ahead. She brings the same thoroughness and compassion to hospital visits and house calls. For pets nearing the end of life, she strives to create a peaceful, supportive experience, whether that care takes place at HEAL or at home surrounded by loved ones.
As HEAL’s owner and medical leader, Dr. Dumas also loves teaching her team and helping them grow their skills. Her goal is for every patient to receive excellent medicine and for every family to feel heard, respected, and confident in their pet’s care.
